    International Speaker Series:

Expanding Educational Access to Forcibly Displaced Students

How can institutional infrastructures of universities be leveraged to expand college education to forcibly displaced students?

Conflict-and-climate-induced disasters around the world affect millions of people every year, forcing many to leave their homes. These devastating events generally result in children and college-age youths being driven out of schools and campuses to refugee camps, forcing many of them into engaging in questionable activities, such as joining a rebel organization.

College campuses around the world are presented with a daunting responsibility to create educational opportunities to address the plight of the forcibly displaced college-age youths languishing in places where educational opportunities are already limited. This presentation, led by Prakash Adhikari, describes implementation of a student-led educational exchange program called Global Classroom that is designed to provide college education to refugees living in the Dzaleka Refugee camp in Malawi, Africa.

Prakash Adhikari is a professor of political science at Central Michigan University. His areas of research and teaching lie at the intersection of International Relations and Comparative Politics with a specific focus on forced migration and transitional justice. His work has received several awards, prizes, and funding, including a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). Adhikari has published several articles and book chapters in places such as the American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Conflict Resolution, International Studies Quarterly, Journal of Human Rights, and Oxford University Press, among others. His ongoing research looks at integration of resettled refugees into American society and the implications of forced migration on international security.

Putting off college, or finding alternatives to college, isn’t that unusual. People with college degrees often treat college for their kids as an inevitable progression. But in 2018 only about 61 percent of those over 25 had gone to college. And only one-third of Americans over 25 have attained a four-year college degree. It is true that public confidence in higher education is at an all time low and college enrollments have been falling.

At the same time, people with a BA earn significantly higher wages. In this talk Dr. Woglom reviews the evidence on college costs, student debt, and the monetary and nonmonetary returns to a college education. He argues that a BA degree “is still worth it.” More importantly colleges have an important role to play in helping us meet the challenges of providing meaningful jobs in a world increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence.

From its introduction in 1839, photography has transformed the ways in which we see the world. Photographs capture events and also transform them; they depict reality but also tell a story. Scores of photographs have changed America and we will discuss several of them in detail. Some, such as Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother and Joe Rosenthal’s Flag Raising on Mt. Suribachi, will not come as a surprise. Others, including a nineteenth-century photograph of an immigrant, may open eyes anew. Examining the histories of these images, and learning how to read them, provides a deeper understanding of how photographs have shaped—and continue to shape--American society and culture. We are fortunate to have Dr. Masur join us at OLLI.

    Celebrating Harbor Springs Historical Museum

The day's presentation is in honor of International Museum Day and its theme for 2024 - “Education and Research"

On this special day we will tour the Harbor Springs History Museum, the outdoor installation of Ephraim Shay’s Aha boat and the Andrew J. Blackbird House. After the walking tours, guests will head upstairs (elevator available) in the History Museum for a 20-minute presentation that will discuss how local sources are available and accessible for conducting historical research.

The Harbor Springs History Museum, in the old courthouse building, officially opened to the public in 2008 and history found a permanent home in Harbor Springs.  The West Vault of the building was added to the former city hall building prior to 1896 and was used to store important records. The West Vault space is now a display area of incredible Native American quill boxes.  The East Vault has been transformed into a small recording space for oral histories.

The Aha, an all-steel yacht built in 1894 by Harbor Springs inventor and lumberman Ephraim Shay, has returned home to Harbor Springs after an extensive restoration project by the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society.

Chief Andrew Blackbird was an Odawa (Ottawa) tribe leader, historian, and proponent of Indian civil rights.  He purchased his house on Main Street in Harbor Spring in about 1858 for the use of his family of four.  When he was appointed postmaster, the house doubled as the post office, and residents picked up their mail in the Blackbird kitchen. After 1947 the house was sold to the Michigan Indian Foundation, and opened as a local museum in 1948. The City of Harbor Springs purchased the house in 1964, with the stipulation that it be used an Indian museum. It now operates as a museum of American Indian artifacts.

We often hear that the country is now more politically and socially divided than ever before. Our country, however, has been through many bad years, and we have always pulled through. In this course we will take a look at the year 1877, one of the craziest years in United States history. It kicked off with a contested and confusing presidential election, millions of workers went on strike, the rich got richer, and white supremacists ended the last vestiges of Republican reconstruction in the South. It was a period so tumultuous and violent, that from all appearances it looked like our country was on the edge of Armageddon. This period makes today appear to be downright tranquil.

Sponsored by the Little Traverse Bay Beekeepers Guild

"From April 2022 to April 2023 United States beekeepers lost 48.2% of their bee colonies." (From Bee Informed Partnership)

This large scale bee loss has been with us for the past several years and doesn't seem to be slowing down. We can do a lot to keep our bees healthy and winter ready but losing bees is a reality all beekeepers will experience. In order to sustain our beekeeping hobby it is useful to learn how to make bees.

This will be an in-class workshop discussing and demonstrating how to produce your own bee colonies by splitting existing bee colonies, making queens, managing nucleus colonies for sale or as a way to sustain or increase your colony numbers. Any beekeeper with one or more colonies of bees can use these skills to become more sustainable.

Wildflower Walk in the Offield Reserve

    with Brad Von Blon

When the winter snow melts in Michigan, a variety of wildflowers begin to emerge, some of which grow nowhere else on earth. Our state and our planet are home to a vast variety of life—known as biodiversity. Many of these flowers bloom in abundance. Others are at risk of disappearing. Because the loss of one species can speed up the loss of others that depend on it, scientists say we must act urgently to help nature rebound this decade—and that will require big commitments from countries, companies and communities.

Just a few miles from downtown Harbor Springs, the Offield Family Preserve has become a favorite community destination for wildflower viewing, hiking, dog walking (on leash), and nature classes. A mix of open meadows and forested hilly woods are found. Seasonal ponds are known as vernal pools and are especially common in spring and fall.

Join Brad Van Blon, of the Little Traverse Conservancy, on a walk through the preserve identifying and appreciating the beauty and importance of different wildflower species.

    Two Fused Glass Flower Pendant

Come to the “Glassroom” at NCMC and make 2 lovely fused glass necklaces. You’ll design and assemble up to two 1 to 2-inch glass pendants using colorful glass pieces. There’s no cutting required. Glass artist Heidi Reichenbach Finley makes this a super-fun, relaxed, and social event with friendly guidance for even the most glass-squeamish beginner. Fused glass is different from blown glass—you won’t be near the heat. Your creation will later be expertly fired smooth in the college kiln room by Heidi.

These make great gifts, and you may decide to make more than two for a smaller additional fee. As with all of Heidi’s classes, participants need no prior experience in glass or art of any kind to be successful. Really!

Completed pendants will be available for pick-up at the college several days later with your choice of leather cord or silver-plated chain. Shipping is available.

Additional information for students: There is no supply list for students. Though participants won’t be cutting or breaking glass, eye protection is available in the glassroom,   The instructor will provide safety guidelines and support for proper handling of glass. Oden Island Preserve Hiking Tour with Brad Von Blon

Brad will discuss the moss and lichens during a hike of this beautiful property. A successful fundraising effort in 2000 resulted in the Conservancy’s purchase of this large, undeveloped waterfront property. The acquisition closed the door on a controversial 34-unit subdivision proposed for the site. Now the preserve helps maintain the water quality of Crooked Lake, which lies near the upper portion of the Inland Waterway, a 40-mile navigable waterway that boaters can take into Lake Huron at Cheboygan.

    BRAD VON BLON

    STEWARDSHIP TECHNICIAN

Brad grew up in Ohio but quickly escaped a few times to neighboring states with more exciting flora. He earned an Associate’s Degree in Wildlife Management at Hocking College before transferring to West Virginia University for a Bachelor’s in Wildlife & Fisheries Resources. A lot of his time has been spent on the arid ridge tops of the Appalachians down to the humid muskegs of Michigan, usually looking for rare plants. He’s worked mainly as a naturalist, a “certified bird feeding specialist,” a bobcat necropsy technician, and a tech at West Virginia’s largest herbarium. He fell in love with the North Woods after spending a season at Seney National Wildlife Refuge, and this will be his third summer with LTC.

    Getting Creative with Tarot

Are you seeking ways to explore your creativity? Expand sources of inspiration?,  Please join us for an interactive, applied workshop on how the imagery and symbols of the Tarot can help! No prior familiarity with Tarot is needed; all you need is a deck and a desire to see how Tarot cards can support or jumpstart your creative projects. Topics explored include how to “enter” a card to draw inspiration, the role of intuition, and storytelling, among others. The workshop is experiential, with plenty of activities to help you get started or go further using Tarot as a creative tool.

Cancellations are non-refundable within 24 hours of this event.

NOTE: You will need access to a Tarot deck for this workshop. Please feel free to bring a deck you have; you may also find a wide variety of Tarot cards at the Poetess and Stranger in Petoskey and Inspired Living in Boyne City.

Sara Glasgow, Ph.D., Dean of Arts and Sciences, NCMC
Sara has been practicing and sharing her love of Tarot for over thirty years and Norse runes for fifteen years. Through workshops and consultations, she aims to raise awareness of the diverse ways that these systems nurture creativity, meditation, and personal empowerment. One of the beautiful aspects of Tarot is that cards can be interpreted singly or as part of a larger story. As the first card of the Tarot, the Fool begins from ground zero and sets out on a journey through life, meeting key individuals and navigating encounters, trials, and lessons along the way to grow in experience and wisdom. The twenty-one remaining cards of the Major Arcana are the key signposts of that life journey; as signposts, they offer us an opportunity to explore deeper storytelling connections between the cards and their applicability to situations we may experience in our own lives.

Please join us for a series of five interactive, applied workshops that explore in-depth the Fool’s Journey of the Tarot. Folks newer to Tarot are very welcome, though prior exposure to the cards is helpful; at the end of the day, you only need a deck and desire to explore the interpretive possibilities of the Fool’s Journey and their relevance for you.

Topics explored include symbolic elements of the individual Major Arcana cards and the journey progression between cards; overarching journey stages and transition points; the role of companion cards; and alternate journey structures to expand storytelling possibilities. The workshops are experiential, with plenty of activities to help deepen your comfort with the cards and understanding of this journey through the Major Arcana. While the workshops cover basic principles, comfort comes with practice. For this, optional resources and activities are also offered to help as you independently practice and refine your skills.

NOTE: You will need access to a Tarot deck for these workshops. Please feel free to bring a deck you have; if you need to acquire one, Inspired Living (Boyne City) and Poetess and Stranger (Petoskey) have a variety of great options.

Tarot of Daily Life – The Minor Arcana

One of the most wonderful things about Tarot is that it speaks both to the big picture experiences of life, as well as those of our day-to-day existence. Focusing on the realms of inspiration, creativity, and action; thoughts and plans; feelings, hopes, and dreams; and work, vocation, and skills--the four suits and 56 cards of the Minor Arcana are the ones that dive most deeply into our daily lives.

Please join us for a series of five interactive, applied workshops that explore in-depth the Minor Arcana of the Tarot. Folks newer to Tarot are very welcome, though prior exposure to the cards is helpful; at the end of the day, you only need a deck and desire to explore the interpretive possibilities of the Minor Arcana and their relevance for your daily life.

Topics explored include the significance of the four suits of the Minor Arcana and their associations; symbolic elements of the individual Minor Arcana cards of the same suit and the story progression between them; the significance of court cards; and connections between cards across the different suits. The workshops are experiential, with plenty of activities to help deepen your comfort with the cards and understanding of this journey through the Minor Arcana. While the workshops cover basic principles, comfort comes with practice. For this, optional resources and activities are also offered to help as you independently practice and refine your skills.

    Fused Glass Sailboat Pendants (2)

Come to the “Glassroom” at NCMC and make two lovely fused glass necklaces. You’ll design and assemble 1 to 2-inch glass pendants using colorful glass pieces.

Please dress for work and wear closed-toe shoes. Questions? Students may contact the instructor anytime at midwestartist@msn.com or (260) 667-8719

No drop-ins. At the latest, students must register prior to the day of class and should arrive on time for class, so as to receive adequate instruction.

Intended for adults age 18 and up. Children 12-17 may register and participate under the close supervision of a registered adult participant.

Cancellations are non-refundable within 24 hours of this event.

    Hailand/Helstrom Family Nature Preserve

Join Little Traverse Conservancy naturalist Brad Von Blon on a trip around the Hailand Nature Preserve to identify many of the trees that call Northern Michigan home. We’ll focus on simple ways to distinguish common species and discover their unique places in our ecosystems. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring shoes that can get muddy! Meet at Parking area (P on map).

    BRAD VON BLON, STEWARDSHIP TECHNICIAN

Preserving our personal histories can be an exciting, cathartic, and daunting task, and one well worth tackling. In this six-week workshop we will explore choices made and gambles taken in our personal writing - not our lives - as we celebrate our unique stories and the characters we’ve encountered. Have you started a memoir? Great! Not yet? Still thinking about it? Great! All stages of progress and skill levels are welcome.

Prompts used in class and for optional HW (HomeWrite! - roughly 500 words) will generate new writing. Additionally, we will revisit some techniques that all but guarantee greater clarity and “instant style!” Discussions will focus on purpose, goals, forms, revision, and feedback. Please note that given the number of enrollees and time constraints, we may not hear from everyone who wishes to share every time. For those who do share, please know this will be an encouraging environment, and your story will stay in the classroom.

Please bring your preferred writing tools, either paper or laptop, your work in progress, your hot/cold beverage of choice, and your readiness to write!
