November 22 - Crypto Currency: This talk will provide a glimpse into the world of cryptocurrencies and “FinTech.” Bitcoin is the earliest and largest crypto currency, and the speaker will describe how it came to be, what it is and what its broader implications might be. The innovations underlying Bitcoin have shaken up the world of finance and raise important public policy questions such as: 1) Why do we need (or want) cryptocurrencies? 2) Do we want Facebook to run our payment system and 3) What role does or should government regulation and the Fed have in the evolving world of cryptocurrency and online finance? 

December 13 - Gender Wage Gap: Talk of a gender wage gap has been ubiquitous for quite some time now. The median earnings of women in 2021 were about 83% that of men. This presentation looks deeper behind what that number means and what it masks. We look at the trends in relative earnings of men and women over the past few decades, and study various hypotheses put forth in the economic literature to explain the relationship evidenced. Lastly, we discuss a few areas where work might be needed to further bridge the gap in averag

 

Jon Haveman is the Executive Director of the National Economic Education Delegation (NEED). He is a noted California economist where he has been practicing since 2001. He has been Senior Economist with the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, and an Economist with the Federal Trade Commission. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Michigan.
