Icons are central to Russian culture in so many ways. Because they use the forms of this world to glimpse the eternal world, icons bring worshippers into contact with something larger than life. The first session will examine the visual methods used and the concepts being illustrated to open up an appreciation of both their significance as religious objects and their ability to create connections beyond themselves. The second session will illustrate the ways in which icons influence Western style art as well as the aesthetic of Russia’s artists.
