British History with Dr. Julie Taddeo

This class will peer beneath the fantasy perpetuated by romance novels and TV series like “Bridgerton” to closely examine the larger social and political world of the men and women who lived “in the fashionable mode” and whose lives were tightly circumscribed by rules, gossip, and fear of scandal

October 6 - Historical Fantasies and Realities in “Poldark’s” Britain: This talk will look at the larger world in which Captain Poldark (TV series) lives, works, and loves, examining its industrialization, banking, mining, and politics, and the plight of women and the poor during the 18th Century Cornwall era. Dr. Taddeo will look at fan obsession with all things “Poldark,” which has caused Cornwall to become the most visited destination in the UK (pre-pandemic), actually prompting the local tourist board to beg travelers to go elsewhere.

October 20 - London’s High Society in the Regency Era: A Business of Pleasure: Dr. Taddeo will peer beneath the fantasy perpetuated by romance novels and the TV series like “Bridgerton” to closely examine the larger social and political world of the men and women who lived “in the fashionable mode” and whose lives were tightly circumscribed by rules, gossip, and fear of scandal.

Dr. Julie Taddeo is a professor of British History with University of Maryland.
