Fun with Fossils

This class is open for 3rd-8th graders. All projects will be age appropriate.

NOTE: The first day of this class will be held at the breakwall at the Petoskey waterfront. Students will be collecting stones for their projects. Parents will drop off and pick up their students here on Monday, July 22nd. Class will be on the NCMC campus for the rest of the week.

What’s a fossil? Where did they come from? Why are they here? This class will introduce the participant to the various fossils that are in our area and how they can be made into beautiful works of art. This will be a hands-on, interactive time to explore the wonders of these ancient corals. Each student will find their own stones and then begin the scrubbing process to sand away imperfections.

If the student chooses they may have their stone shaped into the Michigan mitten, a heart or a fish. The student will also get a chance to have the instructor help them make jewelry, magnets, sun catchers and other items. Participants will also contribute to the “Class Coaster” project. Each person will find stones and put them into a tube which will later be filled with epoxy and then cut by the instructor to make coasters. This class will ensure that their next trip to the beach will be more exciting and adventurous. Warning: Your student may turn into a rock hound!
