James McCullough, a retired North Central Michigan English professor, grew up in northern Michigan in the 1960’s and 70’s when Petoskey was still a remote tourist town. He began fishing on Walloon Lake every summer since before he can remember and graduated from the worm and bobber to the fly rod fifty-three years ago. It is an activity central to his life, friendships, and the primary subject of his writing. He is author of a book about the writer and fly fishing icon, Robert Traver (John Voelker), with whom he fished when he was fifteen, entitled, Voelker’s Pond: A Robert Traver Legacy, which was selected by the Library of Michigan as a notable book for 2003. Also, in 2018, he authored Echoes, a collection of reflective, outdoor essays published by Deep Wood Press. A twenty-year contributor to Traverse Magazine, McCullough also published essays in The Bear River Review; Blue: The Michigan Magazine; The Dunes Review, and The American Journal of Fly Fishing.
Copies of McCullough’s book, Echoes, will be available at the class for purchase.
