The U. S. Air Force had a massive presence in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for five decades. B-52 bombers, refuelers, fighter-interceptors, surface-to-air missile sites and radar stations were all stationed there. Then, they were gone. Steven Keck will share the fascinating chain of Cold War events close to home that arose from America’s fear of a possible war with the Soviet Union. Steve served 16 years in the U.S. Coast Guard as chief of emergency management for the northern Great Lakes and 24 years in the Air Force involved with tactical air control, presidential airlift planning for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush, and many other duties around the world. He currently serves as the emergency planning and security officer for North Central Michigan College.
