Be prepared to move and work as a team- participants will be on their feet for the greater part of the course, working as a whole group and with a partner to learn historic circle and longways set folk dances from the 1800s and 1900s. We will be swinging elbows, clapping palms, shaking hands, and sideways galloping (sashaying). Students will be choosing partners and also be assigned partners during different activities and should come to class ready to work with everyone.

DAY 1: Circle Dances

DAY 2: Longways Set Dances

DAY 3: Miscellaneous Dances

DAY 4: Favorite Dances

*Students need to wear closed-toe, closed-heel shoes and comfortable clothes.  Bring a water bottle for hydration! If this is the student's first Summer Learning Academy class of 2026, we will provide a water bottle for them.

Instructor: Miss Julie Laur

ABOUT ME: I love music! I play trombone with the Northern Michigan Brass Band and piano with the Walloon Lake Community Church music team. I serve as the Music Director for the annual PMS and elementary musicals (enrichment plays). This is my 13th year teaching general music at Petoskey Schools, and my 21st year of teaching music.

Previously I have taught band, choir, and general music in Indiana, Colorado, and Michigan. I grew up in Houghton Lake, MI and have family throughout the Midwest. I love seeing the “aha!” moments arrive on students’ faces when they grasp new concepts, and there’s nothing like the joy of making beautiful music together.
