American Sign Language (ASL) offers young students a fantastic way to build bilingual, motor, and cognitive skills while learning about a new culture and unique language.
Research shows that ASL exposure improves letter recognition, vocabulary growth, and English literacy. Forming signs with hands and arms utilizes different areas of the brain, aiding in language retention, while exposure to ASL can build empathy and introduce students to Deaf culture.

Ginny Petrie works as a Nationally Credentialed Deafblind Intervener in a local school district. Previously, she worked as an educational interpreter in the K - 12 setting. She has taught ASL 111 and 112 at NCMC for the past nine years. When she's not working, she enjoys reading, yoga, and spending time with her family.
