What if children's rights meant more than keeping kids safe? Fresh off a trip to Sweden and Finland, Jennifer Wixson, North Central’s early childhood education coordinator, explores how Nordic communities are built around a broader belief: that children are competent, capable citizens who deserve the freedom to play, explore, and experience the world on their own terms. She'll share stories and photos from forest schools and neighborhood playgrounds and make the case that play isn't a break from childhood — it is childhood. How we protect it says something about the world we want to live in. In June, Ms. Wixson began a two-year term as president of the Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children, the state’s leading professional organization dedicated to advancing high-quality early childhood education.
